Sit Back and Relax
Spirituality and aging in place, mindfulness and meditation have been demonstrated to increase relaxation and increase longevity. The meaning of Spirituality is different for everyone. For some, it’s about being part of a congregation and attending church, synagogue, and mosque. For others, it’s through private prayer, yoga, meditation, quiet reflection, a walk in the park, or a bible study group.
It’s possible to be spiritual without being religious and vice versa. You can be ‘spiritual’ without being a member of an organized religion. Many older adults see spirituality as a great way to seek comfort and peace in their life while thriving at home and aging in place.
To many older adults, exercising their spirituality and having a spiritual relationship to the world around them is an important element of successful aging and the process of developing beliefs around the meaning of life and connection with others that gives their life deeper meaning.
Spirituality and aging in place also involves getting in touch with your inner self that includes mindfulness and relaxation to help you focus your thoughts and find peace of mind. You might also consider journaling to help you express your feelings as well as reading self-help books / magazines / stories to explore different philosophies of life.
Be Good To Yourself
Spirituality and aging in place is also nurtured by relationships with others and making relationships with friends and family a priority. Realizing this, it’s essential to foster relationships with the people who are important to us. This can lead to a deepened sense of our place in life and in the greater good.
Staying connected to our inner spirit and the lives of those around us can enhance our quality of life, both mentally and physically. Our personal concept of spirituality may change with our age and life experiences, but it always forms the basis of our well-being, helps us cope with stressors large and small, and affirms our purpose in life and helps us to age freely and happily.
